They will join Chambers as tenants in September 2026 and will accept instructions across all of Chambers’ practice areas.

Nigel Patel: I have enjoyed pupillage at 39 Essex Chambers and the excellent introduction it has given me to life at the Bar. As I begin to build my practice across Chambers’ diverse practice areas, I look forward to applying what I have learned during pupillage alongside my experience as a solicitor in private practice, government and the courts.

Christian Scotland-Williamson: “Pupillage at 39 Essex Chambers has made my transition from a career as a professional athlete and broadcaster to the Bar an exceptional experience. I am incredibly grateful for the support and encouragement I have received from everyone across Chambers. I look forward to building a practice across Chambers’ core areas over the coming years.”

Colin Thomann KC, Head of the Pupillage Committee: “Nigel and Christian have acquitted themselves with distinction and draw upon a remarkable range of life experiences. It is a real privilege to welcome them to 39 Essex Chambers as our colleagues. We now look forward to watching what promises to be their outstanding careers at the Bar unfold.”
