Bruce Brodie, 19th March 1937 - 31st July 2024

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Bruce Brodie, our much loved and respected dear friend and former colleague, passed away at home on Wednesday 31st July, 2024.

Bruce was one of that hugely talented group of South African lawyers that fled apartheid and established themselves in the very highest echelons of the English legal profession.

He transferred to the Bar after a successful career as head of litigation and then managing partner of Frere Cholmeley of Lincoln’s Inn Fields, a firm which was eventually swallowed up by Eversheds. He was a much admired and successful litigator, acting in the Beatles litigation following the break-up of the band in about 1970.He practised happily from No.39 for about 20 years before retiring some years ago.

Bruce was a talented fast bowler who was not far off the national side at one point.   In 1961 he played for Cambridge University against the touring South African team and Wisden commented, “[the touring team] were given a fright by Brodie, one of their countrymen who bowled with life and accuracy.”

When Bruce retired, he and Louise moved to a penthouse flat over-looking Lords cricket ground where they spent many happy hours watching cricket together and with their daughters, grandson and friends.

Bruce was a kind, wise, clever but unassuming man, who had time for everyone.  We shall miss him greatly.”
