Joseph commenced pupillage in September 2025 and has been a New York-qualified attorney since 2023.
Prior to coming to the bar, Joseph was a Judicial Assistant to Lady Rose at the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, Associate in Covington and Burling LLP’s International Disputes team, and Senior Policy Advisor to Emma Reynolds MP, now Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Joseph holds a BA (Senior Status) in Law from Cambridge University, ranking first in International Law. In addition, Joseph obtained an LLM at Harvard Law School, with a focus on Corporate Law and ESG, and an MSc in Behavioural Economics, Warwick University, with a focus on corporate sustainability.
Joseph has also assisted Companies and NGOs on ESG and human rights related matters, including claims relating to extra-territorial jurisdiction. He currently teaches Private International Law and Conflict of Laws at UCL.
He was named “Future Legal Mind of the Year” by National Accident Helpline in 2020.
Areas Of Expertise
During the public law seat of pupillage, Joseph was supervised by Peter Mant KC, Tom Tabori and Nicola Kohn. He gained experience in a range of public law matters, including:
- Drafting submissions to the Court of Appeal to refuse an appeal of a High Court decision on the circumstances in which a regulatory body may owe a duty of care.
- Drafting submissions to refuse an appeal of a Court of Protection decision not to discharge a Transparency Order.
- Drafting submissions to the Special Immigration Appeals Commission to refuse an appeal of a decision to refuse to grant an individual’s application for naturalisation.
- Research on the legality of proposed switching from Part 2 to Part 3 of the Data Protection Act 2018 for the purposes of processing.
- Research on the application of the Equality Act 2010 in the context of trans rights.
Joseph has particular experience in this area from his previous work as a senior policy advisor and Judicial Assistant. In the latter role, Joseph was involved in several leading public law cases:
- Shvidler v FCDO [2025] UKSC 30 on the approach of appellate courts to proportionality in human rights cases; and whether sanctions imposed on two individuals were proportionate.
- Jwanczuk v DWP [2025] UKSC 42 on discrimination and bereavement support payments; and the approach to conflicting judgments across the UK’s jurisdictions.
- Simkova v DWP [2025] UKSC 41 on access to universal credit and EU citizens with pre-settled status.
- Skykick v Sky [2024] UKSC 36 on the continued application of EU law in the UK.
Joseph was also involved in permission to appeal applications in:
- In the matter of an application by Gemma Gilvary for Judicial Review (UKSC/2025/0017) on discrimination law, the Windsor Framework, and parliamentary sovereignty.
- Secretary of State for the Home Department v George (UKSC/2024/1008), on deportation and imperative grounds of public security.
Business and Human Rights
Prior to becoming a barrister, Joseph supported Covington & Burling LLP’s business and human rights practice, a global market leader, advising on modern slavery.
Joseph has also assisted Robert McCorquodale, member of the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights.
As Judicial Assistant at the Supreme Court, Joseph was involved in the permission to appeal application of UKSC 2024/0149 – The Estate of José Luis Cutrale (represented by Rosana Falcioni Cutrale) and another (Respondents) v Viegas and others (Appellants), regarding conflict of law principles to succession, in a claim brought by descendants of orange farmers for alleged anti-competitive practices by a Brazilian multinational.
He holds Masters in Behavioural Economics from Warwick University, with a focus on ESG; and Law at Harvard, focusing on corporate standards. His research included:
- Quantifying the value of environmental damages in ESG claims.
- Analysing company obligations regarding international human rights standards.
Joseph specialises academically in jurisdictional issues, achieving a high first at Cambridge University. He currently is both a teacher and supervisor of Conflict of Laws at UCL.
Joseph is also familiar with business and human rights arbitration, in particular the Hague Rules on Business and Human Rights, through his role as Assistant Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
During the civil liability seat of pupillage, Joseph was supervised by Michael Standing and Daniel Laking. His experiences spanned personal injury, clinical negligence and costs, including:
- Research for Judith Ayling KC for a case involving the illegality defence and both common law and HRA Claims.
- Assisting Susan Rodway KC in the cross-examination of a key witness in a multi-million pound clinical negligence claim.
- Advising on a product liability claim involving an exploding deep-fat fryer.
- Drafting a defence in a road traffic accident matter.
- Drafting a Letter of Claim and Schedule of Loss in two Clinical Negligence claims.
As a Judicial Assistant at the Supreme Court, Joseph was involved in two significant cases on the merits:
- CCC v Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UKSC/2023/0111) on lost years earnings.
- Lewis-Ranwell (Respondent) v G4S Health Services [2026] UKSC 2 on the illegality defence in clinical negligence claims.
During the commercial and construction seat of pupillage, Joseph was supervised by David Sawtell KC, Hannah McCarthy and David Hopkins. He gained experience in a range of matters including:
- Advising and drafting pleadings in the construction context, including actions against guarantors, sub-contractor disputes and contribution claims.
- Advising on adjudication under the Housing, Construction, and Regeneration Act 1996.
- Drafting particulars of claim in a multi-million pound property dispute relating to trespass to land and nuisance claims.
During the planning, environment and property seat of pupillage, beginning in May 2026, Joseph will be supervised by Celina Colquhoun, Ned Helme and Daniel Stedman Jones.
As a Judicial Assistant at the UK Supreme Court, Joseph was involved in the following planning and environmental law cases:
- Darwall v Dartmoor National Park Authority [2025] UKSC 20 on the public’s right to camp on Dartmoor Commons.
- Save Stonehenge v Secretary of State for Transport (UKSC/2024/1004) on the legality of the road development scheme near Stonehenge.
- Walthen-Fayed v Secretary of State for Housing (UKSC/2024/0081) on the development of a crematorium near to a housing development.
