Victoria Butler-Cole KC appointed as Deputy High Court Judge

39 Essex Chambers is delighted to announce that Victoria Butler-Cole KC has been appointed as a Deputy High Court Judge under section 9(4) of the Senior Courts Act 1981, by the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Baroness Carr Of Walton-on-the-Hill.

Victoria’s appointment is a six-year term and runs from November 2023. This appointment follows an open competition run by the Judicial Appointments Commission. The role of Deputy High Court Judge is reserved for those who have the experience and expertise to deal with very complex cases and will include work which would otherwise be undertaken by High Court Judges. She has been assigned to the Family Division. Victoria will continue in full time practice at 39 Essex Chambers whilst undertaking her judicial responsibilities.

Victoria was called to the bar in 2005 and subsequently appointed Silk in 2019. Throughout her career she has specialised in Administrative and Public Law, specifically, health and social care, community care, mental health & mental capacity law, human rights claims and regulatory appeals. Victoria is the Chair of the Court of Protection Bar Association and an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Law at University College London.
