Contaminated Land Case

Progress In Remediation

ENDS Report 27 September 2018 recorded that while there is no record of how many sites as a whole have been designated under Part IIA, a survey in 2007 reported some 659. The public records held by the Environment Agency show that 54 special sites had been designated. The last was in 2011. The drop in designation is attributed to reduced resources but also to the use of other mechanisms than Part IIA, notably the planning system. Special sites include the former Albright and Wilson Works at Whitehaven in Cumbria, the Sefton Meadows Landfill site on Merseyside, and Helpston Landfills at Peterborough.
