Third Six Pupillage – Applications for 2019

39 Essex Chambers has a vacancy for up to two third six pupils, start date September 2019.


39 Essex Chambers is a leading civil law chambers that specialises across a broad range of areas including Commercial, Construction, Planning and Environmental, Public and Regulatory, and Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence Law.  39 Essex Chambers has a very strong reputation and client base both domestically and internationally.  It has offices in Singapore and Malaysia.

The Pupillage

Third six pupils are expected to undertake written work for, and attend hearings on a regular basis with other members of Chambers and/or as directed by our clerking team. Third six pupils are also expected to accept instructions to undertake work of their own. Pupils can expect to undertake work in a range of different practice areas, consistent with chambers’ main specialisms.  In terms of their own work, they can expect to be instructed in a diverse mixture of civil liability matters and will regularly appear in court.

Pupillage will be divided into two three-month seats (spanning different practice areas).


Third six pupillages are unfunded.   However, Chambers guarantees earnings of up to £18,000 (for the six month period).   Chambers will also offer third six pupils an interest free loan of £10,000, to be paid back over the sixth month pupillage period.

Assessment criteria

We apply the same criteria when selecting mini-pupils, pupils and tenants, namely:

  • Intellectual Ability.
  • Expressive Ability, both written and oral, and including the ability persuasively to defend a position in argument.
  • Interpersonal Skills with solicitors, lay clients, Chambers (both Barristers and staff) and other members of the Bar.
  • Commitment, Drive and Efficiency, and the related skills necessary to become a barrister and to pursue a successful career at the Bar and to further the interests of Chambers.
  • Interests in one or more areas of law in which Chambers specialises.
  • Interests outside the law.
