Ellie holds a double first-class degree from the University of Cambridge and was awarded Inner Temple’s most prestigious scholarship to fund her bar course studies.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Ellie worked in various legal roles, most notably as a Judicial Assistant in the Court of Appeal for the 2021-2022 legal year, where she assisted on a broad range of significant appellate cases.

Areas of expertise

Administrative and Public

Public Law

During the public law seat of her pupillage, Ellie was supervised by Colin Thomann KC, Steve Broach KC, Rachel Sullivan and Nicola Kohn. She gained experience on a range of complex public law matters, including assisting with:

  • Multiple challenges to local authority decisions to close public services.
  • Advising a Central Government Department regarding potential human rights issues, statutory interpretation, and litigation risk in relation to a proposed policy change.
  • Advising a Central Government Department on strategy and associated risks for obtaining documents disclosed by parties to civil proceedings.
  • Drafted grounds of appeal to the Court of Appeal and the skeleton argument in an environmental law appeal.
  • Drafting submissions to the Upper Tribunal in a Special Educational Needs Tribunal Appeal.
  • Drafting grounds of resistance to a challenge against the decision to certify an Article 8 ECHR claim as clearly unfounded under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.
  • Drafting grounds of resistance to a challenge against the decision of a local authority to reduce a care package.
  • Drafted a jurisdictional challenge to a claim against an international institution.

Prior to pupillage, Ellie worked as a paralegal at a public law firm specialising in education and disability law, where she ran her own caseload of Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal Appeals. Ellie also worked in the legal team at Ofsted, where she provided assistance on complex judicial review proceedings and regulatory matters.

As a Judicial Assistant in the Court of Appeal, Ellie worked on public law appeals, including London Borough of Barking and Dagenham v Persons Unknown [2022] EWCA Civ 13, and R (KG and BG) v Suffolk County Council EWCA Civ 1047.

Court of Protection

Ellie is keen to develop her Court of Protection practice.

During the public law seat of her pupillage, Ellie gained experience in Court of Protection proceedings, including assisting with:

  • Drafting position statements.
  • Drafting grounds of challenge in Section 21A MCA 2005 proceedings.
  • Drafting grounds of appeal in a case concerning the withdrawal of treatment from a critically ill patient.

For the 2021-2022 legal year, Ellie was the Judicial Assistant to Sir Andrew MacFarlane, President of the Family Division and Court of Protection, where she worked on high profile Court of Protection appeals, including Re AH (Serious Medical Treatment) [2021] EWCA Civ 1768, Re E & F (minors: blood transfusion) [2021] EWCA Civ 1888, and the Archie Battersbee proceedings.

Regulatory and Disciplinary

Ellie is developing her regulatory and disciplinary practice. During pupillage, Ellie’s regulatory and disciplinary training included: 

  • Drafting grounds of appeal on behalf of the Professional Standards Authority regarding the sanction imposed by a panel of adjudicators.
  • Drafting grounds of appeal regarding a sanction imposed by the Bar Tribunals & Adjudication Service.
  • Researching potential changes to the SRA’s investigatory powers for Andrew Tabachnik KC.

Prior to pupillage, Ellie gained experience in regulatory law through her role in Ofsted’s legal team. From September 2025, Ellie will be seconded to the Office for Students.

Civil Liability

During the civil liability seat of pupillage, Ellie was supervised by Emma Corkill and Daniel Laking. She gained a range of experience, including:

  • Settling Particulars of Claim, Schedule of Loss and Advice in a road traffic accident claim.
  • Advising on causation, including material contribution and indivisible injury principles, in a high value personal injury claim.
  • Drafting defences in clinical negligence claims.
  • Drafting a defence in a workplace bullying claim.
  • Preparing a skeleton argument in a fixed costs dispute at Detailed Assessment interpreting part of the Pre-Action Protocol for Low Value Personal Injury (Employers’ Liability and Public Liability) Claims.
  • Drafting Replies to Points of Dispute in Detailed Assessment proceedings.

Ellie appears regularly in the County Court in civil matters including small claims, applications under the Civil Procedure Rules, and costs and case management conferences. 

Commercial and Construction

During her commercial and construction seat, Ellie was supervised by David Sawtell and David Hopkins. Her training included:

  • Drafting Particulars of Claim for damages and an injunction in property matter involving continuing nuisance.
  • Drafting a skeleton argument resisting the grant of permission to appeal an arbitral award under s69 of the Arbitration Act 1996.
  • Advising on whether parties are associates for the purpose of the Building Safety Act 2022.
  • Drafting a defence to a debt claim brought against personal guarantors.
  • Advising on the enforceability of a deed executed by only one party.
  • Advising on the merits of a claim for loss of profit and for breach of implied terms in an international sale of goods dispute.
  • Advising on the enforceability of an incomplete contract, and specifically whether the dispute resolution clause was binding.

During her second six of Ellie has also been instructed to appear in applications to set aside statutory demands. 

Planning and Environment

During the environment, energy and planning seat of pupillage, Ellie was supervised by Ned Helme and Daniel Stedman Jones. Her training included assisting with:

  • Advising on a proposed development in the grey belt in light of the updated National Planning Policy Framework.
  • Advising on the need for re-consultation and relevant material considerations for the redetermination of a planning permission application.
  • Advising on permitted development rights and relief options for an alleged demolition without prior approval.
  • Advising on village green and rights of way issues.
  • Advising on a claim for crop loss suffered as a result of a compulsory purchase order.
  • Drafting submissions for a planning inquiry on behalf of a Rule 6 Party.
  • Advising on a challenge to a local plan.
