Paul Hayes QC has been appointed as a Co-opted Judge of the FIA (Federation Internationale de L’automobile) International Court of Appeal.
The International Court of Appeal is the final appeal tribunal for international motor sport. Established under the FIA Statutes and the FIA’s International Sporting Code it resolves disputes brought before it by any of motor sport’s National Sporting Authorities world-wide, or by the President of the FIA. It can also settle non-sporting disputes brought by national motoring organizations affiliated to the FIA.
The co-opted judges are nominated by the Formula One teams and approved by the Congress of the FIA Courts, of which 39 Essex Chambers’ Edwin Glasgow CBE QC is Vice-President . The judges, along with judges drawn from the list of Members elected to the ICA, hear cases relating the the FIA Formula One World Championship.
Paul has a wealth of experience in sports law and, since 2003 he has regularly appeared as Counsel in the Court of Arbitration for Sport and other national and international sports tribunals. He is also widely published in the discipline of sports law. Paul also practises in the areas of commercial and equity litigation, international law and arbitration, insurance and defamation.
Paul’s appointment is effective from 2019.
