Leading international arbitration lawyer David Bateson is to join 39 Essex Chambers, it has been announced today.
David will be based in 39 Essex Chambers’ Singapore office from where he will practise as arbitrator, focusing on international arbitration. He joins Chambers from King & Wood Mallesons in Hong Kong where, for over 35 years, he has specialised in all forms of dispute resolution throughout Asia including arbitration, litigation and alternative dispute resolution. He will continue to assist King & Wood Mallesons as a consultant.
David began his career at Denton Hall & Burgin in Hong Kong in 1980 and was a partner at Mallesons Stephen Jacques in Hong Kong from 1990 to 2012. Since then he has been a partner of the Hong Kong office of King & Wood Mallesons. He has built a reputation internationally for his work as an arbitrator, with extensive experience acting in arbitrations across Asia, the Middle East and Europe. He is on the Panel of Arbitrators for SIAC, HKIAC, CIETAC, KLRCA, FACT and APRAG.
In Best of the Best Expert Guide, David was named as one of the world’s leading experts in commercial arbitration. In recent editions of Global Counsel 3000, Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitration, Chambers Asia, PLC Which Lawyer? and Asia Pacific Legal 500, David was named as an expert in commercial arbitration, commercial litigation, construction, and a leading arbitrator.
David will join 39 Essex Chambers on 1st July 2015. He will operate from the Singapore office, alongside Ben Olbourne who joined the set in 2014.

39 Essex Chambers’ growth internationally is further evidenced by the appointment of an Asian Business Manager, Julianna Wong. Julianna, who joins from 20 Essex Street, will be based in the Singapore office on a permanent basis from where she will assist Roderick Noble, Director of Asian Business. She takes up her position on 1st June.
