James Ramsden QC is instructed in multiple cross-border cryptocurrency claims

Reflecting his pioneering work in claims for interim relief concerning the identification and recovery of cryptocurrency, James Ramsden QC has been instructed by the Liquidators of crypto exchange, "Cryptopia" in New Zealand and by two LA based crypto investors in claims to recover cryptocurrency and assets acquired through dealing exchanges across the US, India and the UK."

The well-publicised collapse of Cryptopia in January 2019 followed the hacking and theft of $23m worth of currency. The Christchurch based trading platform was put into administration as NZ Police investigate what is New Zealand's biggest ever theft. The investigation of the hack and the tracing of the proceeds initially focussed on Intranel, on whose software platform the Cryptopia exchange operated.

The LA investors suffered a similar breach of software security. The recent surge in cryptocurrency values and the entry into the market of what are regarded as "mainstream" players such as Google and Facebook has resulted in a surge in the use of both Bitcoin and Ether.
