39 Essex Chambers Member Professor Andrea Biondi Appointed Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union

39 Essex Chambers member Professor Andrea Biondi has been sworn in as the Advocate General for Italy in the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for a six-year term.

Professor Biondi will be one of eleven Advocate Generals responsible for independently and impartially presenting an opinion on cases considered by the CJEU.

Professor Biondi is a leader in EU law and his advisory work includes state aid, the law of the EU internal market, energy and judicial protection. He provides expert opinion in cases and arbitration proceedings and has considerable experience in advising national governments and international organisations.

He has a distinguished academic record with visiting positions at leading universities, including Georgetown University, the College of Europe, University of Paris II, Bocconi University in Milan and University of Rome La Sapienza. 

Andrea Biondi was most recently a Professor of European Union Law and Director of the Centre of European Law at King's College London.
