One of Hefin Rees QC’s cases this year (Harlequin Property (SVG) Limited and Harlequin Hotels & Resorts Limited v Wilkins Kennedy (a firm)) has been recognised by The Lawyer magazine (18/01/2016) as being one of the top 20 cases in the UK for 2016.
The case involves a £70m claim against a UK firm of accountants for breaches of fiduciary duty and a conflict of interest in acting for both a developer and a contractor in a large construction project in the Caribbean and allegedly enabling the contractor in St Vincent and the Grenadines to misappropriate funds to spend on a luxury lifestyle. The contractor spent the funds on purchasing a Falcon Jet, a luxury house in Sandy Lane Barbados, and on a very lavish lifestyle. The case is listed to be heard before Mr Justice Coulson on 13 June 2016 with a time estimate of 6 weeks. There will be 25 witnesses of fact and 4 experts giving evidence at the trial.
