Environmental assessment
What our barristers do
Environmental assessment is one of the key workhorses of environmental law. Its main planks are the Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment regimes, and our barristers have a wealth of experience in these areas, as well as in associated areas such as sustainability appraisal and the Habitats Regulations Assessment regime. Environmental assessment arises most commonly within the planning system, but our barristers act in all areas in which environmental assessments occur.
Who our barristers act for
Our barristers act for the full range of stakeholders in this area: developers, landowners, local and central government, other public bodies, non-governmental organisations, interest groups and others engaged in the process.
Where our barristers act
Our barristers act at all stages of the environmental assessment process, including in relation to screening, scoping, preparation of environmental statements and environmental reports, decision-making, appeals and court challenges. Our barristers commonly act in planning inquiries, development consent order (DCO) examinations, Parliamentary Bill Committees, and local plan examinations involving environmental assessment issues, as well as in court challenges at all levels.
