About the Event

The Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 remains one of the most important legislative regimes for business tenancies. Frequently, it is cited as a source of frustration for landlords with redevelopment plans for commercial premises. The 1954 Act is now undergoing rigorous review by the Law Commission, which has recently announced an interim statement following its first consultation on the Act.

This seminar also celebrates the publication of the third edition of ‘A Practical Guide to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954: Commercial Tenancies’ co-authored by David Sawtell.

Topics will include:

  • Ground (f) and (g) cases: what do you need to prove in 2025?
  • Ground (a), (b) and (c) cases: hints, tips and tactics following Gill v Lees News Limited [2023] EWCA Civ 1178.
  • The Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 and the Electronic Communications Code – similarities and pitfalls
  • Update on the Law Commission’s review: what is the future of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954?

The seminar will be followed by a drinks reception in Chambers.
