Daniel Stedman Jones successfully defends Sports Ground in Gloucester from registration as a town or village green

CategoryNews Author Daniel Stedman Jones Date

The ground had previously been left for the use of Debenhams staff and their families by the former owner of the store in Gloucester. Having fallen into only sporadic use, the trustees recently sought a sale which would preserve the land’s use as a sports ground. The decision was made to sell the land to Gloucestershire University. However, a challenge was brought to the sale by way of an application to register the land as a town green. Daniel Stedman Jones successfully acted for the trustees at the inquiry, which was held in October 2014. The central issues were the extent and nature of the use of the field and whether it could be said to serve a significant number of a locality or a neighbourhood within a locality. The Inspector’s recommendation was accepted in February 2015.
