Contaminated Land Case

Remediation And Odours

As noted in the text, land remediation can generate serious odour problems which may have legal implications. Examples have been reported at the Southall Waterside Development (a 3,750 home mixed use development which was once a municipal gas works) which is generating a "petrol-like odour" (ENDS Report 8 November 2018) and a site near the London Olympic Park, where work was halted by the local planning authority, the London Borough of Hackney, after a smell made children at a local primary school feel sick (ENDS Report 17 October 2018). Excavation of the 110 home residential site had exposed benzene and naphthalene from a former refinery, galvanising and rubber-works.
