Contamination Caused By Fire

Possible soil and water contamination caused by the tragic fire at the Grenfell Tower is being investigated: ENDS Report 3 December 2018. Concern has been raised as to possible deposition of asbestos, cyanide and polycyclic organic compounds. An investigation strategy has been developed by the Environment Agency as part of a multi-agency partnership including the local authority, Public Health England, with oversight from a panel of independent experts led by the Government's chief scientific adviser and the chief scientific adviser to the Department of Health and Social Care. An independent consultant has been appointed to carry out the first, essentially desk-based, phase of risk assessment, which will be followed by site investigation and sampling informed by phase 1.
