It was announced in November 2018 that a new contract had been awarded by Natural Resources Wales under which the Coal Authority would carry out four feasibility studies on some of Wales’ most significant abandoned mines, including a Roman lead mine which represents a major source of pollution of the Dyfi river catchment. This is intended to lead to a 15 year metal mine remediation programme, though to put matters in context it is estimated there are around 1,300 abandoned metal mines which contribute heavy metal contamination.
