Contaminated Land Case

Clean Up Of Mines

It was announced in November 2018 that a new contract had been awarded by Natural Resources Wales under which the Coal Authority would carry out four feasibility studies on some of Wales' most significant abandoned mines, including a Roman lead mine which represents a major source of pollution of the Dyfi river catchment. This is intended to lead to a 15 year metal mine remediation programme, though to put matters in context it is estimated there are around 1,300 abandoned metal mines which contribute heavy metal contamination. See ENDS Report 21 November 2018.
