Highly regarded international arbitration and litigation specialist Ben Olbourne is to join 39 Essex Chambers it was announced today.
Ben joins Chambers from 20 Essex Street where he has been a member since 2004. In that time, he has built a significant reputation particularly for his expertise in international commercial disputes. He has been based in Singapore for the past three years where he has a Licence to Practise Foreign Law and has firmly established his standing with local and international firms in Singapore and the Asian region. Ben intends to continue to practise principally from Singapore alongside his litigation and arbitration work in London and other jurisdictions.
Recognised as a leading junior in International Arbitration by Chambers Asia-Pacific 2014, who describe him as “eloquent, very up to date on the law and able to play up the strengths of a case to best advantage” and “practical, tactical and a rare example of a barrister who can speak plain English and avoid the legal jargon that can baffle clients,”Ben’s most recent work has been principally in the general commercial, international trade and commodities, energy, oil and gas, and shipping sectors. He has considerable experience of public and private international law disputes, including in particular investment treaty disputes. He is also recognised in Legal 500 2013 and 2014 (for commodities) and will shortly be recognised in Chambers Global 2015 (for arbitration in Singapore).
Ben also accepts appointments as an arbitrator and has recently been appointed under Singapore International Arbitration Centre and London Maritime Arbitrator Association Rules as well as in ad hoc proceedings. He is on the panel of arbitrators of SIAC (reserve panel), the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, and the Australian Maritime and Transport Arbitration Commission.
Ben was previously admitted as a legal practitioner in New South Wales and was a clerk (legal assistant) to Chief Justice Gleeson of the High Court of Australia in 1999-2000.
This latest high-profile joining emphasises the continuing growth of 39 Essex Chambers’ international practice. The set opened its Kuala Lumpur office in October this year, the first set to do so in Malaysia, an extension to the already established Singapore office. Chambers’ success internationally was also recognised recently in the Legal 500 UK Awards 2014, where it was awarded ‘International Arbitration Chambers of the Year’.
Chief Executive and Director of Clerking, David Barnes, says “We are absolutely delighted that Ben will be joining us. His reputation in Singapore precedes him and his local knowledge and reputation in international arbitration will be an invaluable addition to our rapidly growing practice.”
Ben Olbourne adds: “I am delighted to be joining 39 Essex Chambers at what is a very exciting time in the growth of its international practice and in the development of Singapore and Asia generally as a centre for the resolution of international commercial disputes. 39 Essex Chambers and their members are at the forefront of many of the recent developments in this area, as signified by chambers’ recent award, and I am very much looking forward to continuing and developing my practice with them.”
Ben will be practising from 39 Essex Chambers’ Singapore office, in Maxwell Chambers, with immediate effect.
