Andrew Tabachnik Saves Smithfield Market’s Bacon

CategoryNews Author Andrew Tabachnik QC Date

Andrew Tabachnik, acting for Save Britain’s Heritage and the Victorian Society, has won an overwhelming decision from the Secretary of State rejecting plans to replace much of Smithfield Market with office blocks. The Secretary of State agreed that the proposals would cause substantial harm to the Market buildings and to the Conservation Area in which they were situated.  He found that there were insufficient public benefits associated with the proposals, in particular because the alternative scheme for refurbishment and re-use advanced by Save Britain’s Heritage and the Victorian Society were realistic and viable, and so represented the “optimum viable use” of the buildings.
