An Introduction to the Court of Protection for Medical Practitioners

Consent, shared decision making and giving patients choices are at the core of modern clinical practice. In this webinar we explore the situation for those patients who may not be able to make decisions due to a lack of capacity.

In this introductory session, Victoria Butler-Cole QC and Ian Brownhill, two Court of Protection specialists, will provide an introduction to the Court and when it has a role in making a decision which patients might not be able to make themselves.

This webinar will address:

  • What does it mean to have mental capacity to consent to a particular treatment?
  • When should the Court of Protection be involved in decisions in respect of medical treatment?
  • The representation of the patient in proceedings.
  • Urgency and out of hours applications.

This session was organised at the request of a number of junior doctors. However, we would be delighted if doctors, nurses, midwives (and other medical professionals) of all levels of seniority join us.
