Ethos and Values

Chambers’ values of inclusion, innovation and excellence are borne out by its long history. Originally founded around 100 years ago it soon became a friendly and inclusive set with a small number of barristers. 39 Essex has retained this ethos whilst growing to become one of the largest chambers in the country with almost 250 people working out of its state-of-the-art premises in the UK, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Our barristers practice across a range of specialisms and across continents. We seek to work collaboratively to achieve the best results for our clients.

The past hundred years has seen our staff and barristers recognised as leaders in their fields in numerous publications. Chambers proudly lists many Supreme Court Judges, Court of Appeal Judges and High Court Judges amongst its current and past members. Members of chambers have been involved in numerous landmark cases across our specialisms. However, while we are proud of past successes we do not rest on our laurels; we continue to strive for excellence in all we do.

We know that it is important to understand what unites us as a group of members and staff - this is key to our continued success. We have spent over a year discussing and exploring what our core values and ethos are – reflecting on our history and our future, surveying members and staff and running focus groups, domestically and internationally.  Everyone at 39 has had the opportunity to be involved in this important discussion.

Our values are:

  • Excellence - We aim for nothing less than excellence in the service that we offer our clients. We promote and support the success of every individual, no matter what their role.

  • Inclusivity - We are friendly, welcoming and open in our communication. We celebrate difference and expect everyone to have a voice and to be heard.

  • Innovation - We encourage creativity and new ideas. We welcome change and are not afraid to do things differently.
