39 Essex Chambers has announced that it is to move to new premises in 2015.
The Chambers, which is made up of 123 barristers and 40 staff, will relocate from its existing premises at 39 Essex Street to the newly developed building at 81 Chancery Lane. 39 Essex Chambers will be working closely with the developers on an extensive re-fit of the 50,000 sq ft building, which will include state of the art client suites and modern working arrangements designed to ensure that chambers’ accommodation is fit for purpose for the next decade and beyond.
The move follows the set’s rapid expansion, which was boosted in late 2012 by welcoming 25 members of 4–5 Gray’s Inn Square, and continues with many recent lateral hires. It can now claim to be London’s largest multi-disciplinary set.
Chief Executive and Director of Clerking, David Barnes, says:
“We have outgrown our offices at 39 Essex Street and have been looking for the right premises in which to house all of our barristers and we are thrilled to have agreed terms with Deerbrook on the development of 81 Chancery Lane. The building is perfectly situated in the heart of legal London, between the Royal Courts, the Rolls Building and the IDRC and is extremely accessible for clients.”
Joint Head of Chambers Stephen Tromans QC says:
“The last couple of years have been a time of significant and targeted growth for Chambers, which has been very successful, but has meant members and support staff being divided between three buildings. In addition, we recognise that a step change is needed in our facilities and infrastructure for client conferences, seminars and video-conferencing. 81 Chancery Lane will meet these needs. It will also provide an opportunity to reassess how we work and what facilities and support our barristers need. We are very excited about the possibilities.”
Chambers expansion also continues internationally, with an office opening in Kuala Lumpur in September this year.
The move to 81 Chancery Lane is scheduled for Summer of 2015.
