In Bad Odour: A practical seminar on odour nuisance and control

In times past, industrial “pongs” were a matter for music-hall jokes. Now they are anything but – they can create miserable living conditions for residents, generate vast volumes of complaints, and serious impede or prevent economic regeneration efforts.

39 Essex Street is offering a practical seminar on the issue which will be of interest to local authority lawyers, planners and industry.

Matters to be covered:

  • LAW
    • statutory nuisance – procedures and practical issues
    • PPC and waste licensing
    • planning control
    • enforcement problems and tips
  • SCIENCE
    • types of odour nuisance and the problems they present
    • dealing with complaints
    • objective odour measurement and odour impact/planning conditions
    • BPM and practical control
    • case studies

Stephen Tromans is a barrister specialising in environmental law, and has been involved in many of the recent major cases on odour nuisance, for example the leading case of Hounslow LBC v. Thames Water Utilities in which the Divisional Court held that statutory nuisance applies to smells from sewage treatment works.

Steve Peirson is a specialist odour consultant with extensive experience in odour measurement, mitigation/abatement and odour nuisance work across a wide range of industries.  He has provided expert evidence on behalf of local authorities and appellants in both planning and nuisance cases.
