Employment Law Update

The seminar will examine:

  • An update on the law of sex discrimination: overview of recent case law

  • The Vento guidelines: how flexible?
  • Employment law and human rights: recent developments
  • Recent developments in whistleblowing cases: qualifying disclosures; disclosures in good faith; detriment; compensation.

William Norris QC has acted for employers in a large number of Tribunal cases, particularly where the reason for dismissal has been misconduct such as fraud. Most recently he acted for a large American corporation which was alleged to be responsible for harassment/discrimination in relation to a female employee who subsequently committed suicide. There were difficult issues not only of liability but also of quantum.

Richard Clayton QC undertakes a wide range of individual and collective employment law including high value discrimination claims, whistleblower cases, privacy and data protection, confidentiality and restrictive covenants, industrial action, local government work maternity rights and disputes between unions and their members. He has a particular expertise in human rights law and is the author of The Law of Human Rights published by Oxford University Press in 2000 and Practice and Procedure at Industrial Tribunals (Legal Action, 1986). Richard writes and lectures extensively on employment law topics; he is the Visiting Fellow, Centre for Public Law, University of Cambridge. He is described in the Legal 500 as a leading silk in employment, public law and human rights and in Chambers Directory as a leading silk in public law and human rights. 

Parishil Patel’s employment practice includes all aspects of unfair dismissal, sex, race and disability discrimination and redundancy law.  He has had extensive experience in the employment tribunal acting for both applicants and respondents.  He has also appeared in the High Court in wrongful dismissal claims. Parishil also has a substantial public law and human rights practice.  He is a member of ELA and ELBA.

Kate Grange practises in all areas of employment law with emphasis in this area on unfair dismissal, sex, race and disability discrimination and redundancy.  She is also familiar with EU principles and has worked in the past for FRU.
In February 2003 she was appointed Junior Counsel to the Crown C-panel and since that time she has regularly appeared on behalf of government departments in employment cases. 
Her experience encompasses both applicant and respondent work. In addition to her employment work, Kate practices in the areas of commercial law, public law and human rights.
